Totally Rad Like, For Sure 90s Week: Day Six - The Fads

Alright, it's

and so far this week we've covered the dances, the movies, the music, the clothes, the tv shows, and today - Day Six - we're going to talk about the fads.  That's right, every crazy fad I can think of - both awesome and ridiculous.

Ready?  Here we go...

Koosh Balls

I had a teacher who stole these from students and used 'em as stress balls.

Trapper Keepers (Also, Lisa Frank stuff)
Also had the stickers, pencils, erasers and folders.

Pogs
I was AWESOME at pogs.  I had super-cool slammers that were metal and had 8balls on them.

Beanie Babies
All I wanted was one with my birthday on it.  Did they have one?  NO.  Stupid beanies.

Doc Martens
I just HAD to have a pair of these after a friend of mine went to Paris over the summer and came back with a pair.

Push Pops
I was more of a sunflower seed and laffy taffy kind of kid.

Polly Pocket
Didn't have any of these.  Too many tiny pieces to deal with.  Plus we had dogs that liked to chew small toys.

Thighmaster
I thought she was cool because she was on that show Step by Step.

WWJD Bracelets
Had one of these in just about every color.

Troll Dolls
I've already covered these.  My sister had them, and they creeped me out.  Evil little dolls with crazy hair.  (I suspect that they are the cause behind the belly button piercing craze.)

Slip n Slides
The most awesome thing to do in the world.  Well, other than putting Dawn on the trampoline and hosing it down.   (I can't believe I never broke a bone as a child.)

Fanny Packs
Thank God my mother never bought these for us.

Skip-it
I was the champion of skip-it.  I could do like 500 skips in a minute.  Oh yeah.

Those weird pacifier necklace things
I never understood this one.  I did own one, though. It was blue.

Slap bracelets
Yes.  These were almost immediately banned from school due to the whining of wimpy kids being slapped by other people.

LA Gear light-up shoes
I totally had a pair of these for basketball season.

And we can't forget the catchphrases that took over our vocabulary....

DID I DO THAT?

Whatever.

Did I forget any?

Totally Rad Like, For Sure 90s Week: Day One - The Dancing

That's right, people.  This is THE week to read my blog.  Why, you ask?  Well, I'll tell you.  It's

I know, I'm so excited!

Every day this week I will cover something from the 90s - fashion, music, movies, fads, etc.  Friday will be the GRAND FINALE (and no, I'm not giving any hints), after which I will be MIA for the weekend because the hubs and I are going on a belated anniversary weekend getaway to Destin, Florida.

So, let's get on with the week dedicated to all things 90s...

Day One:  The Dance Moves

There were some awesome dance moves to come about during the 90s, and a few that were really awful.  Either way, we've all done these dances at least once.  I'm including video clips (when available) from YouTube just in case you've forgotten how the dances go.

The Dip

This dance was banned from all school dances when I was in Jr. High, mostly because it violated the "12-inches between dancers" rule.

Macarena

Aahhhhh.  I know we all know this dance.  I did this dance so much in the early 90s that it's ingrained permanently into my brain.  My favorite EVER example of this dance is Dr. Evil in Austin Powers doing it.  "Taka taka taka taka aaahhh!"

Tootsie Roll

Still one of my favorite jams to dance to (I call it bustin' a g-sag, but that's me).  I love hearing, "The butterfly, uh-oh that's old, let me see that tootsie roll!"

Running Man (aka the MC Hammer)

I could NEVER do that sideways jig thing he did.  Wasn't happening.  I did want some pants like that though.

This last one, although it isn't an actual dance, I LOVE, and still break it out every once in a while.

The Carlton

Now go clear a space and do all of these dances again, because you know you want to!

Be sure to check in tomorrow for another totally rad, like, for sure, 90s post!

Fantabulous Friday

First, let me say that today is in and of itself FANTABULOUS for two specific reasons:

1.  I was featured on blogging pal Nicole's blog It's All Random today.  Yay! Thanks, Nicole.

2.  On another blog I follow, Girl About Business, I won a giveaway contest, and will soon be the happy owner of a new book!

So go check out my friends and give them some love, because, well, they're fantabulous!

For today's post, I decided to get all melancholy on y'all and talk about the past.  Our subject for today:

THE 90s

Yep, I'm going to give y'all the best (and worst) fads of the early 90s.

THE MUSIC
We had MC Hammer telling us we couldn't touch this, Vanilla Ice bragging about how gangster he was, New Kids on the Block serenading us, the Spice Girls telling us what we want, what we really really want, and Hanson Mmmbopping us to death.
As much as we all try to deny it, the music we danced around to was - for the most part - terrible.  But at the time, we loved it!

THE MOVIES

Buffy was a badass, Clueless started the "whatever" craze, Forrest Gump told us about his momma, Jurassic Park made us afraid of dinosaurs and Austin Powers made us want to ask, "Shall we shag now or shag later?" I don't care what anyone says, films from the 90s were some of the best there are.  Yeah, baby!

THE TELEVISION
I could go on for days about all of the shows I watched in the 90s that I still love to this day.  There was Saved by the Bell, Blossom, Boy Meets World, Family Matters, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Alex Mac, Hey Dude, Clarissa Explains it All, All That, Salute Your Shorts, TRL, Singled Out, My So-Called Life, Daria, Real World, just to name a few.  Loved 'em all!

Now for some of the biggest - and most annoying/awful fads there were:

POGS

When I was in fourth grade these things took over our school.  I'm not kidding, it was Pog-a-palooza at every lunch break, recess break, before and after school and sometimes during class.  Eventually our school banned them completely.

SPANDEX PANTS WITH NEON SOCKS
SCRUNCHED DOWN AND HIGH TOP SHOES

Seriously, I don't know who thought this looked good, but everyone was wearing it.  Kids, moms, teenagers, everybody.  We also wore oversized t-shirts and tied the ends in a knot or used one of those little circle things.  Thought we were so cool.

TROLL DOLLS

My older sister had about fifty of these evil little dolls.  I hated them.  They creeped me out.

SCRUNCHIES
Between me and my sister, we had about two hundred of these things.  Every color you could think of, polka dots, stripes, plaid, logos, some with characters on them, tye-dyed...

I don't know where they all disappeared to.  I imagine Mom donated them to Goodwill.  So maybe someone, somewhere is still stylin' the scrunchy.

SURGE

This drink hit our area seemingly overnight and it was what everyone was drinking.  Tasted like Mountain Dew with twice as much sugar and carbonation, but we drank it anyway.  So glad it fizzed out quickly.

That's all I've got for today.  Partly because my brain is tired, and partly because I got tired of googling pictures of this stuff!

Makes you want to dig through your attic and find your old clothes for a flashback fashion show, doesn't it?  And while you're at it, pull out the old pogs and have a tournament.

No?

Me neither.
